Public Meeting at Mangatainoka.

(From our own correspondent.) A public meeting, convened by Caption Richardson at the instigation of Mr F V. Ilnggen, was held in Mr Wugstaff s hi ck building, Mangatainoka,, last evenin ~ Seventeen were present. Mr A. Harrell was voted to the chair. ■ F; • meeting was to ask the settlers of i\! ngatainokato join the Woodvillepeople, »t:id assist them in obtaining gay £7OO of i Government grant to tho WoodvilleA.'Uanga road to he allocated to the Wood- \ :!!o end of the said road, as it would be a greater benefit to the Mangatainoka people tii mto Woodville. (A voice : Doubt it.) 11 called upon Mr P. .J. Murphy to expi tin the position. Mr Murphy thought this meeting out of P *-ce and utterly uncalled for. He pointed out very clearly that it did not concern the . langatainoka people in tho least. Mr Dolton was the in. uiber for the district 11 'crested, and should have been invited. Do would take no part whatever, as he thought it out of place. Mr Haggen expressed regret at cold w ater being thrown upon the matter. He had been asked by those interested to King the matter before them. He asired them it would draw a large amount i.f trallic to the Mangatainoka Railway Station. Mr 11. Godtschalk asked what was the object of the meeting ? Was it to assist the Woodville people to obtain £750 for t oat portion of road loading to Woodville fn>na Hull’s crossing, or was it for that pertiou towards Makuri ? Voices: To Wooodville. Mr J. H. Walker thought Mr Haggen was simply throwing dust in the eves of those present, as anyone could see at a glance the drift of Mr Haggen’a scheme was to divert money towards Woodville. Jf not. why this suspicion? Mr Haggen denied this in a very halfhearted way, and stated he wished the money to he spent m opening up towards Bailey's Ridge. A general open discussion here took place, some speaking on one topic, some on another. Eventually Mr Marsh drew tiic Chairman’s attention to the fact of a hole and corner meeting being held in the | room (laughter). It was resolved on the motion of >lr 1 Cade, seconded by Mr T. J. James, That this meeting thank Mr Hall, M.H.R., for his elToris is obtaining sums on the estimates which will benefit this district. ; nd that this meeting respectfully urge him to have the sum of £7OO (grant for Woodville-Aohanga road) spent on road from Hull’s crossing to Reilev’s ridge. Mr R. Marsh asked if anything had come of the previous meeting re leases in : perpetuity. Tho Chairman stated that Mr Helps had received a letter, which was less explicit than previous ones. Mr Marsh urged that something he done at once. He moved that Mr C. II ill, M.H.U., bo asked if the Hon. the Minister for Lauds would he up to the banquet in honor of Mr A. W. Hogg. If so, tnai a committee consisting of Messrs Helps, Lundou, Cade, T. J.
