It is extremely pleasing to learn that the Minister of Justice intends to bring in a Bankruptcy Act Amendment Bill to deal with deeds of assignment. During the last twelve months it would probably be correct to say that there has been more private assignments than bankruptcies, not that either are desirable in a community, but the fact emphasises the need lor legislation. Deeds of assignment when not controlled by Statute, give opportunity for the perpetration of much jobbery. The larger creditor gets the advantage in a deed of assignment, while the assignor escapes the meshes of the Bankruptcy Act, notwithstanding that he is a bankrupt. The Bill introduced by Mr Cadman seeks to stop private assignment, by depriving the debtor making an assignment of the advantages now obtained, and bringing him under the penal clauses of the Bankruptcy Act.
