Palmerston N., This Day. A disastrous tire occurred yesterday afternoon, by which the premises of Bett (coachbuilder), Smith and Hall (stableWood (blacksmith), and Browning and Tory (coachbuilders) were totally destroyed. The total damage is estimated at j£8,400, and is covered by insurance to the extent of .£1,500 as follows : Victoria, £600; Standard, £250 ; Alliance, £IOO ; New Zealand, £550. Three horses were burned. All vehicles in the coach building establishments were saved. Later. A second fire broke out in Fitzherbert’s law buildings at 2.50 this morning, the two storey building being completely destroyed. The houses on each side, occupied by Harris (chemist) and Withers, were burned through the roof. The contents of both were saved though injured by handling. Mr Fitzherberl lost a valuable law library and several deeds were partially destroyed; Mr Haggits, his managing clerk, lost a law library valued at £l5O. Messrs Percival (father and son), one a musician the other an artist, lost property valued at £2OO, including a collection of paintings. Neither were insured. Mr Fitzherbart was insured for £SOO in the New Zealand and in the National for £IOO. He estimates his loss at £SOO. Mr Haggitt’s library was insured for Lsoin the Norwich Union. The origin of the tire is unknown. Sudden Death. Girborne, This Day. A very sudden death occurred last night when Dr Burnaby, American lecturer, was seized with a tit of coughing and expired within 10 minutes. Education Enquiry. Auckland, This Day. The enquiry into the system of conducting standard and scholarship examinations held by the Board of Education resulted in tho Board admitting their regulation were faulty and the inspectors were not to blame. Mr Petrie reported against removing Miss Latrobe from the Henderson school. She was an effeieut teacher, but the committee had a down upon her husband, wko is a storekeeper in the distriot. The Rotoura Railway. Auckland, This Day. The contractors’ engine reached Rotorura yostorday, so that the railway to the township is nearly completed.
