The right of a newspaper editor to refuse when asked in a court of law to reveal the name of a writer in his journal cropped up during the hearing. Mr Guthrie, editor of the Press, had refused to divulge the writer of a letter signed “ Viator.” Judge Denniston ruled that Mr Guthrie was bound to reveal the name, and said the right of newspaper editors not to reveal the name was extra judicial. Mr Guthrie still declined, and asked for time to consult his solicitor. The Judge said it was not a question for Mr Guthrie’s solicitor. However, Mr Guthrie might have time for reflection and stand over until other witnesses were examined. Later on the Judge was informed that in order to savo Mr Guthrie from violating a principle the defendant counsel would admit Kinsey wrote the letter.
