NEWS BY TELEGRAPH. Per Press Association. Fire. Gisbobne, This day. The Royal Oak Hotel at Matawhero was horned down this morning. The fire is supposed to have been caused by a defective chimney. The insurances are £450 on the Hotel and stables in the Liverpool and London Globe, and £BOO on stock and furniture in the Commercial Union. Death of the Maori King. Auckland, This Day. King Tawhaio, the Maori King, died yesterday at Parawera. A large tangi will be held. Complications are likely to arise among the natives as to the successor of the King. The New Licensing Bill. Auckland, This. Day. Tho Rev. Isitt was interviev/ed re the Licensing Bill. He said he was afraid the whole thing would be burked this session. He would have preferred a short amending bill including the removal of half vote. He would prefer peoples’ vote to all licenses retail and club three-fifths exchanged for a bare majority in smaller districts and simpler voting papers. He objected to one fourth compulsory poll and principally he thought alliance ought to have consulted the temperance party throughout the colony before publishing criticism on the Bill, and also objected to prohibition votes not being counted for reduction.
