named have contributed directly and indirectly £13,736 —the difference between the amounts paid (with the subsidy) and the amounts received—towards the relief of the poor of Wellington. The whole thing has been a scandalous injustice to the local country districts for the past nine years, and it was thought the House were fully cognisant of this fact when :he second reading of the Bill was carried by a majority ef 15, 53 members voting. We think the defeat of the Bill was to be attributed to the half promise of the Government to bring in a measure to amend the Charitable Institutions Act. The sooner this is done the better, as there are numbers of other contributing bodies to charitable aid boards which suffer from a like injustice. The thanks of the community are due to Mr Hogg for his very able advocacy of the Bill, and also to the members for Waipawa and Palmerston for their hearty support.
