Auckland, This Day. Fijian new's states that prisoners charged with being concerned in the revolt in Fiji, were convicted of murder. Several natives lmd been murdered and their bodies offered as saciifice to hsathan gods. No evidence was called for the defence, the contention vyas want of identification and impossibility of witnesses in state of fright and flight to recognise men with blackened faces in the dark and at least 00 feet away. Each assessor gave his opinion that the prisoners were guilty.’ A lad named Calevu, apparently about 13 years of age, confessed he speared Smakinsa after he had been speared by another. Sentence of death was passed on each individually, both Tuaranawalau apd Masureui. Both men wore thoroughly resigned and acknowledged the justice of their fate. Sentence of the others was commuted as follows : Sawasue and Navaketau to 20 years; Calevu and Navara to 10 years’ penal servitude.
