A Shearing Strike.
'Sydney, July 81. The shearing difficulty is spreading in the North Western districts. Men have already struck in one shed, and those in another are expected to go out when all is ready to begin shearing. Received 11.40 a.m. Sydney, This day. A number of free laborers were taken from a shed and held prisoners by Unionists in the Wilcannia district.
Storms Ahead.
Brisbane, July 81. Mr Wragge reports that the storm system is approaching New Zealand from the South Indian ooean. Received 11.40 a.m.
Victorian Budget.
Melbourne, This day.
The budget shows the revenue has fallen £848,000 below the estimate, while the expenditure has only reached £17,400, leaving a deficit for the year of £665,000. The Treasurer proposes to ask the House to pass the Income Tax next year and impose a new tariff on the recommendation of the Tariff Commission instead of carrying forward a deficit. The Government intend to issue a half a million of Treasury bonds and propose paying oil’ the deficiency in yearly iusallments of a quarter of a million. Received noon.
Scene ip the Assembly.
Hobart, August 1
A scene occurred in the Assembly last night through Mr McDonald making some remarks which Mr Gilmore erroneously interpreted to mean that he had come to tne colony as a oonvict. Ho struck Mr McDonald in the face, and was suspended for the remainder of the sitting.
No More Strikes. Brisbane, This Day. The Assembly unanimously carried a motion affirming that that the time had arrived to face legislation preventing labour strikes. The Premier supported the proposal. A Government Defeated. Adelaide, This day The Labor party in the Assembly, disapproved of the action of the Government in withholding long servioe increases from the police recommitted the Balarte. Liil with the aid of the opposition and defeated the Government by 25 to 28 upon the insertion of a olause guaranteeing the increase.
