A motion has been proposed in the Assembly to alter the constitution in the direction of one man one vote. Attention was called to the fact that Victoria in this respect was behind New Zealand, New South Wales, and South Australia. The Ptemier opposed the innovation on the ground that it was not a matter of interest to the country, and was of very little importance. A warm debate followed this expression of opinion, but was adjourned before a conclusion was arrived at.

The Daily Telegraph adversely criticises the proposal in the New Zealand budget to issue a million and a half inscribed stock within the colony. It adds that colony at present is on a secure footing, financially sound and politically clean, but both th *se qualities will be jeopardised unless this bid for the farmers’ vote is prudently withdrawn. Farmers’ Conference. Sydney, This Day, The Farmers’ Conference has passed resolutions in favor of an income tax and an elective land board. Rising in New Caledonia. Sydney, This Day. News from Noumea reports a Kanaka rising in the Northern part of New Caledonia. In some instances settlers have been attacked, and -the French warship Soortf has been despatched to restore order and punish the offenders. Miserable Melbourne. Melbourne, This Day. The Railway Association declares the proposal for a wholesale dismissal of railway employes will occasion great misery, and it considers the scheme for plaoing men on the land impracticable and utterly useless.
