Received 10.40 a.m. The General Elections. Sydney, This Day. The approaching elections are now the all-absorbing topio, even to the detriment of basiness. The absenoe of the provision compelling candidates to lodge a deposit has brought out a tremendous number of candidates, and with one-man-one-vote and single electorates the result is impossible to forecast, despite both the freetrade and protection leagues are selecting candidates to represent the respective parties. There are (till many strong men of both parties opposing the leagues nominees whieh-tends to further complicate the result. The Premier will have a severe battle for Tamworth, while there seems every prospect of the Hon. F. B. Suttor, Minister for Public Instruction, who is absent in Ottawa, losing the Bathurst seat. The split in the Labor party has also brought out a number ef independent candidates, in oppositien to the League’s selections. A strong fight is expected between Mr G. H. Reid, leader of the Opposition, and the labor candidates. The elections take place on Thursday next.
