Pahiatua Borough Council.

Monday, July 2nd, 1894.

Th# first meeting of the newly-ele«W<i Councillors of the Borough of Pahiatua was held on Monday evening, when there were present:—His Wcrsmp the Mayor b (Mr (i. U. Smithi, and Ore T. V \V. Tosswill, W. Wakaan, H. Hughes, W. W. McCardle, jnr.. T. F. ltedman. J. Burrow*. J. Vile. The Councillors in turu made fend signed the usual declarations. The Mayor congratulated the Councillors on their elections. He also apologised for Cr Sullivan s absence. OVERDRAFT. The Treasurer reported that the overdraft at the Bank stood at £034 ba 6d. CORRKSPONORSCB. From J. D. Wilson, stating that there was no report on Father McKenna's request as Cr Vile has neglected to most as arranged. Cr Viie explained that he waa not present at 11 o clock. Shortly afterwards he saw Mr Dawson and the engineer, and the former told hius Cr Wilson was aot likely to oe present, so taev went so. From A. McMahon, applying for an increase in price of price of rnetai put or Palmers: »u North Road. From McKibbin and Co., applying to have name of J. McK.ulav put on rate roll. From E. Naylor, protesting against drani through his wife’s property. Mrs Willoughby aud Mrs Connor, applying for ass. stance as before. A letter was received from Mr D. Puckle, complaining of rreeas being polluted by draiuage from the Borougn and threatening to proaecate the Council if the nuisances were not abated.

Cr Burrow* aaid he had previoualy pointed out the necessity of this being done. He was still of opmion there was great danger there. Mr Grantham aaid he was willing so give a couple of day* war*. On the motion of Cr Vile, committees were appointed as follows : Finance : —The Mayor, Crs Tocswill, < Redman, Wakeman, and Vile, three to ' form a quorum, the Mayor to be chairman. Cemetery :—Crs Burrows, Keohan and Hughes, two to form a quorum, Cr Burrows to be Chairman. Library : —The Mayor, Crs Redman and Sullivan, together with (ratepayers' nominees, the Mayor to be Chairman. Works :—Crs Vile, Tosswill and McCardle, two to form a quorum, Cr Vile to be Chairman. CONTEMPT OF COURT. Cr Burrows moved That the Council Chambers be no |longer used for sittings of Magistrate's Court from this date. Seconded by Cr Keohan. Cr Tosswill opposed the resolution which was supported by several Crs and carried. Cr Keohan moved That this Counoil respeotfully request the PostmasterGeneral to appoint a letter carrier for Fahiatua.

Cr McCardle moved That with reference to the report from West Ward, the engineer be authorised to have trees tethered in the river at the end of Mangahao read to protect the bank, cost not to exceed £6, and that the offer of Messrs Newport and Grantham be accepted. Seconded by Cr Redman and accepted. Cr Redman moved That a copy of the last annual roport and balance sheet, and a statement of the estimated receipts and expenditure be posted in the Council Chambers. Seconded by Cr McCardle and carried. Cr Wakeman moved That Mr T. C. Williams’ application for approval of plan of right of way be granted on payment of annual fee. Seconded by Cr Keohan. Cr Vile objected on the ground that a •trip of land, a foot wide, effectually blocked the properties of other individuals. Mr Briggs, as a ratepayer interested, strougly objected to the right-of-way as shown on the plan. Mr Tosswill replied in support of the resolution. Crs Wakeman and Keohan withdrew the resolutiou. Cr Tosswill moved That Mr Williams’ request be granted. Seconded by Cr Hughes. Considerable discussion ensued and the resolution was again withdrawn. The application also was withdrawn. Cr Redman complained of the condition of the street near Mr Tuckey’s house. He moved That the Works Committee be instructed to have erected a rough bridge over creek in King street. Seconded by Cr McCardle and carried. The Mayor moved That Mr Carr be asked to report at once at what cost two additional spans of 60ft each could be added to his ‘24oft bridge, or whether such an addition and the extra waterway gained would he a material improvement to his present scheme and a justifiable expenditure, the report to be in not later than the 14th inst. Seconded by Cr Vile and carried. Cr Vile moved That the W.F.C.A. be notified that in all probability ere long the Council will lower the footpath before these premises, and if they purpose making uoy alterations in their shops they should keep this in view. Seconded by the Mayor and carried. Cr McCardle gave notice of his iutention to move at next meeting: That the resolution passed on the ‘2Bth May agreeing to pay taaif cost of forming Mann street extension bo rescinded. The Council then adjourned
