The action of Sir Robert Stout in forcing his motion with regard to the appointment of Sergeant-at-Arms, in the face of the Premier’s assurance, that he would take the House into his confidence on the question, could not be accepted by the Government as other than a motion of want of confidence. Sir Robert’s resolution was framed in a maimer that left no possibility of misconstruction, and notwithstanding the howl of some journals that the question should not have been treated in a party spirit, we venture to say that Mr Srddon was right in throwing down the gauntlet and testing the feeling of the House. The motion is neatly worded and the only effect it could have if accepted by the House would be to hurl Ministers from office. It would be the veriest fiction to assart that Sir Robert was actuated by other than political chicanery. The major question of parliamentary privileges involved in the question could not have troubled him. Had he been swayed by this hearing of the matter he could well have waited till the Premier fulfilled his promise of taking the House into his confidence. He wight with considerable justification have forced Mr Soddon to name or appoint the time for the disclosure. Thi nior mmb r for Wellington tried to play his trump card at the right mom lit, but has fail d. We have reach d the zenith of political cant when actions of this kind are associated with zeal for Parliamentary privilege, and duty to the country. The electors of the oolony must bo thought by our legislators to be a parcel of idiots, or they would never sanctify with the name of zeal or duty such shoddy politics. The most simple voter mast see in the motion the shape and form of the political tsetse fly.
