DISTRICT NEWS.

(From our own Correspondents.) Ballance. April 80. A mating was held of the committee who were appointed to go into particulars re the public hall. Mr Marriott was voted to the chair, and Mr Kip- | penberger was appointed secretary. It was decided to write to the member fer the district (Mr Hall), asking the Government to grant a site ; mar the centre of tho township, the two acres being held by tho Govern merit being the most central, and therefore the most suitable. The Secretary was instructed to get plans and rough estimate of cost of a hall 50ft long and 80ft wide with suitable stage, etc. Tho Chairman and Secretary to prepare a rough prospectus and canvass for shares, shares to be €1 each, and half the money to be called up. Messrs Palmer, Eaton, and Atkinson were appointed to assist the Chairman and Secretary to canvass for shares, and when a sufficient number of shares are taken up a meeting be called ~,0 elect a board of trust, etc. The meeting then adjourned. A large mob of sheep (8000, 1 believe), passed through Ballance on Sunday on their way to Palmerston. Tiny were crossed over the sheep bridge at Tait’s, and were brought round this way to avoid paying toll. The toll, I understand, would beabont £2O, a consideration with sheep at the present low prices. The cemetery fence has just been completed. A splendid job has been made, tho work being far superior to that specified.
