“ I have the honor to report, with respeel to the culvert I was instructed to have placed in Arthur street to relieve Mr Baker and others of storm water, that, >n inspecting the position, I found that the original watercourse on the east side >f tne road passed under Mr Sedcole's muse, and of course has been filled iu ; and m consequence it will be necessary to run 1 idr un from Die outer edge of the culvert to the stream, and as the owner’s permission must be obtained, I have taken no action. The drain must be taken either through Mr Sedcole's property or through Mr Griggs.

1 have called tenders for the metal as instructed, but from the very indefinite •liaracter of the instructions, do not know whethor the specifications will meet with the approval of your Council, the intention implied in them being to have the metal of a coarse description, eo that a great part will have to be broken when spread, and to have it deposited in heaps adjacent to the places which most require it. This I proposed having done, on seeing that in no parts of the roads, especially the Mangahao, would, it be advisable to have a continuous coat of metal put on. The Mangahao road roquires the ruts •*tended to, and from the very round state of the road it seems that the metal, unless care fully broken, would simply be shot off at once by fast traffic. According to instructions from the “ Bridge Committee” I have let the con tract for the groin on the river, and the contractor intends pushing it on quickly as nearly all the timber is on the ground. I have also had the islands mashed up sufficiently for any heavy flood to carrv it away." On the motion of the Mayor seconded by Cr Wilson the report was leceived. Cr Wilson moved That the engineer be instructed to obtain permission to make j outlet drain from culvert across Arthur street to creek. Seconded by the Mayor and carried. ( r Wilton moved That no tenders be consdered for carting metal and that the deposits be returned to tbe tenderers, and that Mr Naylor be asked to cart metal for about two weeks in accordance with his contract.
