Subscriptions are now being solicit d tVi.ii the business portion of th community to assist in defi»yiig th* c* of pm chasing a suitable lire - ::g i t h town. The object is a g: >d on , are, in ad I well-grounded reasons why th i> i iaess people should respond lib rally to the call. First and foremost comes the question of fire insurance rates. If the possession of suitable firefighting appliances cannot secure a reduction of insurance rates now ruiiug, it should at least ensure th people against any increase of tinpresent rates. It is safe to assunn that were Pahiatua visited by a lire of any magnitude, and the town be found unprovided with a fire engine, the first action of the insurance companies would be to at once increase the filtrates by a considerable amount. Thai would mean an enforced and per mauent contribution from the residents which could probably be avoided, and the first cost made the last, by assisting to purchase the require d engine. Possibly all the paraphernalia that could be purchased would fail to extinguish a fire once it had taken a fair hold of wooden Buildings such as line Main-street, but it would prove very efficacious in confining the flames to one block and saving property which, without that paraphernalia, would inevitably be destroyed. That is where the value of a fire engine would bo at once apparent. Self-interest, the most potent of ad factors in influencing a course of conduct, should impel th-- residents to secure the purchase of the appliances required, if that cannot influence th.m, they an not lik ly to be allected by any other considerations, and th?* chance of speedily securing a fire-engine is diminished perceptibly.
