The Hawke’s Bay Floods.
Unfortunate Farmers. [By Telegraph—Press Association.] Napier, April 2. Eight inches of rain fell in thirtyiive hours from Saturday night to Monday morning. The Tutaekuri and Petane rivers were in high Hood. Taradale and Meanee were, for a few hours, in a worse plight than dur ing the Hoods in Novemtar last ; but the water quickly subsided on the cessation of the rain to-day. Farndon was also heavily Hooded. In Petane Valley the water was higher than was ever known before. Clive was free from Hood.
A good many sheep have been lost, but the losses of stock are insignifi cant when compared with those of December, as the waters rose more gradually, and there was time to move the stock.
It is reported that much damage has been done in the country. The rain was accompanied by a gale of unprecedented severity, and the chief damage was to gardens and fences, an enormous number of large trees being blown down. A very heavy sea was running, and seas 80 feet deep swept over th. cant of the breakwater, but do damage of any importance was done either to the breakwater or the wharf. The mole to the west of the breakwater now under construction was, however, heavily damaged, alout 400 feet being swept away. The loss is about €2OOO. The crane nlso went over into the sea.
