(From our own Correspondent)
Makuri
G'orious weather, which it is to be hoped will kept fine for the sport* her* on Saturday next.
Settlers are still awaiting some practical steps being taken anent the Tiraumea bridge, and wou d indeed be glad to hear of the contract being let. Several pas sengers caine in by coach to-day. The journey was not without risk and adventure, a bolt of the coach breaking, and uearlv caused an accident, and some sacks of grass seed lying on the road caused the horses to shy dangerously. The driver is well-kuOwn ns a very careful man. Care should always be shown in tho safetv of coaches and harness, or '(*me da, an accident will be chronicled. We have police and local supervision in most matters, but coaches, which need special attention, seem to escape, borne drivers travel about with their harness. &c., tied up with bits of sack and rope, and seem heedless of the danger incurred. It is high time tms state of things was put an end to. The coach to-day was well found, and my remarks have general application.
Sports are the ono topic, and if the performers do one half of their talking performances great results will obtain. The ford at the Makuri river at Caccia's, 1 which was to be opened up and rendered j passable, ii, still neglected. Now tho Engineer has returned from his weli-earned holiday it is to bo hoped he will give this urgent matter his attention. Settlers are anxiously desirous to hear of the meeting at Pahiatua or Makuri of the Wellington Land Board, aud expect something practical to ensue out of this subject. Sheep are being worried by some of the many curs which arc as plentiful here as blackberries in season. The dog tax collector would reap a fine harvest if he paid us .i visit. As it is some worrier owner will have to pay a large 6um es damage* “ sport ior £ua poodle■ '
