Wellington Land Board.

Change of Tenure. By Telegraph—Own Correspondent.J

Wellington, This Day. At the Land Board yesterday a communication was received from the Under ! Secretary for Lands advising the Board . on the authority of the Minister to refuse to issue leases in perpetuity to village i settlers in exchange for their present leases. An animated discussion ensued, Mr Pirani staling that orginal y he was opposed to the exchange of leases, hut the opinion of the Minister and the Head Office induced him to withdraw his objection. Mr Hogg was astonished at the letter, inasmuch as the Minister of I Lands had called his attention to the clauses in the Act which enabled village settlers to exchange their leases for leases in perpetuity. I» was resolved to reply that the Board does not see its wav to depart from its resolution to issue leases in i perpetuity, and to call attention to the fact th it the Minister of Lands has ex pressed the opinion that the village setrlers were entit ed to ex hauge their ienses. I Leases iu perpetuity were subsequently granted to Messrs Kopke and Sloan, vilager, at l*a liatua. Geiur il surprise is | e xpressed at the action of th Laud Department in trying to prevent the village ; settlers securing the same concession as is ; granted to other settlers.
