There is trouble at present between the local School Committee and the Education Board. Want of funds has hampered the Committee for a long time past, and the most rigid economy has failed to enable them to keep themselves above the mark of financial safety. Repeated appeals to the Education Board for a grant to help them to struggle along have met with no practical response, and day by day the necessity far monetary help has become more pressing. The situation was brought to a climax at the last meeting of the School Committee, when a resolution was passed that unless a grant of not less than £lO were made at the next meeting of the Board the committee would resign as a body. The sum is a paltry one, but even that small concession is not forthcoming from the authorities; while any extraneous help is altogether out of the question. At present the committee are in debt to the tune of about £8 for cleaning school, &c., and without assistance from the Board they have no prospect of clearing off even this small liability. Last year a similar demand for assistance was made and after repeated representations was ultimately met. Even then the committee, though necessarily parsimonious to a degree, went out of office with a small debit balance of something like £2 10s. This year, so far, the capitation allowance has been slightly larger, but the present quarter will probably see a considerable diminution, so that no help can be expected from that quarter. Meanwhile the reply of the Board and subsequent developments will he awaited with interest.
