PREVENTION OF CRUELTY
MONTHLY MEETING CF SOCIETY 'The monthly meeting of the Otago Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was held on Tuesday afternoon, and was attended by Messrs A. D. Sutherland (chairman), E. C. Reynolds, Crosby Morris, J. C. Willis, H. L. Tapley, H. Cooper, S. P. Leith, J. M’Gregor, G. L. Nelson, and the Rev. W. Saunders. DANGER TO HORSE TRAFFIC. Mr G. M. Thomson wrote stating that his attention had been drawn to the fact that the paving of several of the hill roads in the city had made them dangerous for horse traffic. It had been suggested to him that a metalled strip should be left at the edge of the roads. The chairman said that he had recently noticed corporation workmen spreading fine screenings on the roads. The attention of the City Council had been drawn to the matter on several occasions. Several members mentioned cases of horses falling even in the flat parts of the city. It was decided again to draw the council’s attention to the matter, and to point out that it would be much more satisfactory to use sand instead of metal for spreading on the roads. SUPPLY OF LEAFLETS. Mrs F. G. Osmand, secretary of the East Coast (North Island) branch of the society, wrote asking for a supply of leaflets for distribution during Animal Week. The secretary reported that a supply had been sent. INSPECTOR’S REPORT. The inspector (Mr J. J. Hinehcliff) reported that during the month he had visited the following places:—Balclutha, Macandrew Bay, Broad Bay, Oamaru. Edievale, Heriot, Tapanui, Palmerston. Clinton, Wairuna. Stock sales at Burnside. Palmerston, Balclutha, and Clinton had also been attended. He had also been present at the A. and P. Society’s Show, the Poultry and Dog Show, the horse sale, and the race meeting at Wingatui. The inspector also reported on a number of cases which he had investigated during the month.
