RIVER PROTECTION WORK
STRAIGHTENING THE WAIMAKARIRI. CHRISTCHURCH, June 23. The last stage iu the work of straightening the lower reach of the Waimakariri; the greatest river protection undertaking in the history of New Zealand, was successfully completed this morning, when the cut was made through the sand dunes to the sea, thus providing a new outlet. This is the final cut of three —all carried out with a view to securing a fast and unimpeded flow from source to sea, and reducing the possibility of floods to a minimum. The total cost to date is £216,000.
