NEW SOUTH WALES AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP. BRINSDEN DEFEATED. SYDNEY, June 23. The semi-finals in the State Amateur Golf Championship resulted as folfollows: — Dobson beat Brinsden, 5 and 4. Bettington beat Ferrier, 3 and 2. The New Zealand, Brinsden, gave Dobson a great game, but he struck the New South Wales player right on his game. Both were in bunkers at the first, and Brinsden played out into a second bunker, but halved the hole in four. Dobson topped his second at the next, and Brinsden won, 4 to 5. Dobson took three putts at the third, and Brinsden won, par 3 to 4, to become 2 up. Brinsden was in a bunker with his second at the fourth, while Dobson’s second was a yard from the pin. Dobson won with a birdie three. The match was squared at the fifth, when the New Zealander’s drive was caught in a bunker. The sixth was halved in par threes. At the seventh Brinsden’s approach was nearly buried in a bunker, Dobson winning, 5 to 7. Brinsden was again in a bunker at the eighth, and failed to get out, Dobson going to 2 up. At the ninth Brinsden brilliantly negotiated a stymie from six feet to gain a half in par fours. He was again bunkered .at the tenth. The New Zealander recovered to within four feet of the pin, but missed a putt and lost the hole, 4 to s—Dobson5 —Dobson 3 up. A great second at the next put Dobson on the green. Brinsden had a long putt for a half, but the ball went in and out again—Dobson 4 up. The twelfth was halved in par fours after Brinsden just missed a 40-putt for a win. Dobson went 5 tip at the thirteenth, taking only one putt. A good approach putt by'Brinsden gave him a win at the next, par 3to 4. The fifteenth was halved in orthodox fives. Dobson topped his brassie at the sixteenth, Brinsden winning sto 6. Dobson was now 3 up. Brinsden missed a very easy putt jit the seventeenth for a win, a half resulting. At the twenty-second Brinsden’s second was deeply buried in a pot, and Dobson won the hole, 5 to G. Dobson was now five up. Brinsden hooked a drive into the grass at the twenty-third, then drove a brassie into a deep bunker. He recovered well, however, and downed a 10-footer for a win, 4 to 5, Dobson taking three putts. Dobson was now 4 up. Both were on the green at the twenty-fourth with tee shots. Brinsden ran down a long putt for a birdie two and a win—Dobson 3 up. Dobson retaliated at the next by sinking a 15-foot putt for a birdie four and a win—Dobson 4 up. At the twenty-sixth Brinsden holed a six-yard putt for a half. Dobson went to 5 up at the twenty-seventh, when the New Zealander missed an easy putt. The twenty-eighth was halved iii par fours, but Brinsden reduced the margin to four by winning the next, 4 to G. He also notched the thirtieth. 4to s—Dobson 3 up. Dobson hit the flag with his approach at the thirty-first, and holed out for birdie four and a win. The match finished on the thirty-second, Brinsden taking three putts and Dobson winning the hole 3 to 4, and the match, 5 and 4.

Bettington revealed the best golf in his career to defeat the champion, Ferrier. At the end of the first nine holes Bettington was 4 up. The other five holes were halved. Ferrier won his first hole at the tenth, but Bettington won it hack at the eleventh. At the thirteenth Ferrier holed out a 40-foot chip shot for a half. At the end of the first eighteen holes Ferrier was five down. His long game was all right, but he was playing his approaches badly. About 2000 people followed the game after lunch, considerably hampering the players. Ferrier started sensationally, sinking a 30-foot putt for an eagle two at the nineteenth, and he gained another two at the twentieth. He was now only three down, and that was the difference at the turn. Ferrier won the twenty-eighth and Bettington the twentyninth. The next two were halved. Ferrier won the thirty-second after Bettington was in the bushes. Ferrier was now two down with four to play. The thirtj’-third was halved, Bettington recovering brilliantly, and sinking a long putt. The end came at the thirtyfourth, when Bettington holed a very long putt for a birdie four, and the match, 3 and 2.

Bettington played faultless golf in the final of the State Amateur Championship to defeat Dobson, 7 and 5, in the presence of 4000 people. The game started sensationally. Dobson was on the green with a great tee shot and sank a 20-foot putt for an eagle two to Bettiugton’s birdie. Bettington won the second, Dobson the fourth, Bettington the fifth, Dobson the sixth, and Bettington the ninth, where the match

was all square. Bettington took the lead for the first time at the tenth, but Dobson made the game all square again at the twelfth with a birdie three. The fifteenth, sixteenth and seventeenth were won by Bettington, who was leading 3 up at the end of the first 18 holes, the approximate stroke rounds being Bettington 77, Dobson 81. Over the second nine holes of the morning round a strong win 1 made play difficult. The only really bad hole, however, was the par 5 at the sixteenth, which Bettington gained in 6 to 7.

The nineteenth was halved in birdij threes, the twentieth in par fours, the twenty-first in par threes, the twentysecond in par fours. Dobson pushed his second in a bunker at the next and Bettington went to 4 up. He increased h'.s lead to 5 up at the twenty-fifth with a birdie four. Another birdie at the nxt made Bettington 6 up. The twenijseventh was halved in par fours. At this stage Bettington’s figures read 3,4, 3, I, 4,3, 4,3, 4—total 32, or three under par. Dobson’s figures were 3,4, 3. 1, 5,3, 5,4, 4 —total 35. Di spite the fact that Dobson was out in par figures he failed to win a hole. On the contrary, he found himself fighting often for a half. The twenty-eighth was halved. Dobson laid his opponent a stymie at the next and won the hole in 4 to 5. Two visits to bunkers by Dobson at the thirtieth gave Bettington a win, to make him dormie six. Dobson failed to get out. of a pot at the thirty-first and Bettingu n, who was still playing with deadly accuracy, won the hole anil the match. THE OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP. NEW YORK, June 24. In the United States open golf championship the leaders over the first 18 holes were: —Dutra 69, Diesel 73, Sarazen, and Jurado 74, Burke and Hagen 75. Kirkwood tied with two others at 76. With a phenomenal last round score of GG, Gene Sarazen won the Open Golf Championship with 28G. Cruickshank also rallied at the finish ro tie with Perkins for second place w'th 289. Other scores were:—Diegel 294. Cox 295, Dutra, Jurado, Cooper, Barker 297, Hagen 298. Kirkwood was far behind with 304. Sarazen's score has been equalled only once in the 36 years of the championship. OTAGO CLUB. The fifth round of the Otago Club’s Knock-out competition was played on Balmacewen links on Saturday afternoon. The matches resulted as follow: —W. A. Dawson beat J. A. Scoular 2 up, C. R. Spacknian beat B. V. Wright 1 up, H. J. Dodgshun beat A. E. ATDougall 6 and 5, R. IL Aspinall beat C. C. Cox 3 and 1. The St. Andrew's Cross competition was also played, and in the senior event A. C. Begg and R. S. Brown tied with net scores of 77. The junior event also resulted in a tie, K. Ross and G. W. Bowron handing in cards showing net scores of 78. The best scores were: — Seniors. —A. C. Begg, 82 —5 —77; R. S. Brown. 87 —10 —77; R. E. Hayward, S 3 — 5—78; T. B. Ferguson, 83—4 —79; F. L Dawson, 92 —13 —79; J. R. Callendar, 89—9—80. Juniors.—K. Ross, jun., 82 —14—78; G. W.
