A BRUTAL ASSAULT

ASSAILANTS ESCAPE. WELLINGTON, February 14. Brutally assaulted by two men at 9.45 on Saturday evening Clarence Toomer, a service station hand, is lying in the Wellington Hospital with serious head injuries. He was in attendance at the De Luxe service station, at the corner of Clyde Quay and Wakefield street, when the men came and, it is believed, struck him from the rear. Details of the assault are lacking as the victim has not yet regained consciousness. So far as is known at present Toomer was going across the concrete yard from the service station to the store shed at the Wakefield street boundary of the station when he was struck. The nature of the weapon is not known, but it is believed to have been a spanner, making a gash near the base of the skull. There was also evidence of another lighter blow on the top of his head. The young man managed to utter some kind of shout, and a woman who was making a short cut through the service station saw the men coming away immediately afterwards. Toomer, who is 20 years of age and unmarried, resides within a few minutes’ walk of where the assault took place. A force of detectives was quickly on the scene and investigations were continued throughout yesterday.
