CHOOSING AN OUTFIT FOR THE SCHOOL MISS.

(Contributed by the Home Science Extension Service.)

Children’s clothes exert such a decided influence upon health and happiness that they should have the most thoughtful attention. Let ti fi choose an ideal outfit, combining attractiveness with comfort and utility for the young girl going to school. Although the child should be adequately dressed, remember that too much clothing causing excessive perspiration and increased susceptibility to coldg is as serious as too little. Cotton is now generally accepted for underwear for both summer and winter, being not only inexpensive, but also hygienic and easily laundered. A loosely woven material, such ae “ aertex ” makes an ideal undergarment. In cooler weather a woollen garment should be worn over the cotton singlet. Bloomers of the same colour and mateiial as the frock obviate the necessity of a petticoat, reduce the amount of laundry and give a well groomed appearance. Bands round the waist and knees of knickers are preferable to elastic. Tight garters should be absolutely avoided, their place being taken by suspenders preferably hung from the shoulders. Socks with a tightly woven turnover usually remain in place without the aid of garters. In cold weather, long hose should be worn to give the necessary protection to the knee joint. When buying hose, always be sure that the stockings are sufficiently long in the foot and when outgrown discard. Shoes are important. Be sure that they fit the feet, and do not force the foot to fit the shoe. This means that the inside line of the sole should be straight, that the heel and instep should fit snugly, that there is ample width across the toes, and that they are at least half an inch longer than the big toe. The heel should.be broad and not exceed one inch in height. For school wear the outer garment must be not only attractive but also durable and neat. The uniform school gymnastic tunic is ideal for even small children. If in the first place the tunic is really well made, of good wearing serge, and provided with an ample hem, such a garment will be a source .of pleasure and pride to the school miss for many years to come, A sweater is advisable for cooler days and for use at play. •It will also give necessary warmth when worn under a rain coat. A rain outfit is not only advisable’from the health point of view, but also economical when one the protection it affords to clothing. A cloth coat should be simple and . plain in design and material, and when buying remember that a closely woven texture prevents the winds from penetrating.
