PRODUCE MARKETS.

CHRISTCHURCH, October 9. The firming in the potato market, due to a sudden scarcity developing in Auckland continued until this afternoon. Sales by the next two boats have been made at 42s 6d per ton, f.0.b., and in an odd case 45s has been reported. However, this evening values slipped back to 40s, and buyers were scarce. The northern shortage is likely to be relieved by the despatch of the Port Waikato with a full cargo sailing in a day or two, and the Waipiata on Wednesday. Until their arrival the Auckland supply will be short. Farmers have been receiving 20s a ton on trucks and in odd eases 22s 6d. There is more inquiry for milling wheat. September returns of threshings, show-, ing no increase on the previous month’s' figures, suggest that the forecasts of a 7.500,000-bushel crop will not be realised. The market for milling, consequently, is quite firm. Fowl wheat is still quoted at 5s 2d, f.0.b., but not much business is passing. Partridge peas are weaker on account of the Home demand being satisfied. Quotations on trucks are 4s 3d to 4s 4d a bushel.
