HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY

ATTRACTIVE SPRING SHOW - ll FINE DISPLAY OF NARCISSI 1 ( MR H. J. POOLE WINS BRITISH RAISERS’ CUP. f The spring; show of the Dunedin Horticultural Soc.iety, which was begun in the j Pioneer Hall on Wednesday, proved to be one of the most successful held f for some time. Entries showed an increase on former years, and the ( display as a whole exceeded expectations, the judge giving high praise to all sections. A special feature of the show was the association with it of the National Daffodil Society’s South Island show, the awards in which include several New Zealand and South Island championships. The judge of the National Daffodil Society’s sections (Mr C. S. Longuet, of Invercargill) stated that the display on i which he had to adjudicate was exceptionally good for this part of the Dominion? Indeed, it was almost better than one would have expected. There were some very fine collections, and the varieties were quite up to date, a factor which lent interest to a show. There had been a steady improvement in the last few years in all divisions, and particularly in red cups, which had come very much into prominence, and were noticeable particularly in the display of Mr 11. J. Poole, the winner of the British Raisers’' Challenge Cup. The blooms as a whole were well grown, and some were particularly fine. Temperature and moisture had lately been in their favour, and both size and quality had been obtained, a spell of good weather giving the blooms refinement. Mr Poole’s display included Merkara, one of the most striking blooms in the show, and Copper Bowl, which was attractive in colour and form. Beersheba, which was not common in Dunedin, was a white trumpet of outstanding purity. Hospodar was a particularly fine bloom of orange shade, lending colour to the display. Among the Australian-raised seedlings Scarlet Queen was exceedingly line. There were some very noticeable blooms among the white Leedsii, which represented a considerable advance on the older types. The breaks in tint and form were very welcome. Mr Longuet added that there wag a good deal of merit in the seedlings, which every year showed an advance. In the past many had been so much like their parents that they had had no commercial value. Now, however, growers were making good progress and achieving something distinctive. “ I would like to congratulate Dunedin exhibitors on the quality of the flowers shown,” said Mr 11. J. Poole, of Lower Hutt, judge of the open narcissi classes. The display, he added, was an exceptionally creditable one in view of the unfavourable season that had been experienced. The outstanding feature of the exhibition had been the seedlings raised by exhibitors. Dunedin growers were producing blooms that could easily compete with anything else produced in New Zealand. Among the outstanding blooms in lhe open section were Lady Superior, Firetail. Gyr Falcon, Raeburn, and Kantara. The Irwin Cup class was an exceedingly interesting one, including five exhibits of Yellow Poppy, Lady Moore, Honey Boy, and Alarkcra. In the seedling class very fine progress had been displayed in the coloured sections of flowers produced by Dunedin hybridists. Some very promising flowers were Aruna (a White Barrii), which called for special attention, and Corrisande, a very good yellow incomparabilis. Air Poole brought with him from the North Island an interesting trade display, including some blooms which were being shown for the first time. Air F. S. Perrett, the judge of the decorative and floral work, said that the display was well up to the usual standard, showing good work of a light and artistic character. The heavy work seen a few years ago was now disappearing. The colours were exceedingly attractive, and lhe table work particularly fine. There bad been good competition in the bowl and basket classes. Air Perrett drew particular attention to the novel exhibit of Airs F. L. Weddell in the decorated table class. Air E. A. Hamel, judge of the amateur narcissi classes, said that the competition was the keenest he had seen, and he had never previously seen such a large number of entries. The standard was particularly high for amateur classes, the blooms being well grown and clean. The overcrowding of the exhibits had made them difficult to judge. As had been the case at the North Otago x Show, insufficient space had been allotted for the competition.

The cut flowers were described as exceedingly good for the time of the year, particular mention being made of the polyanthus-primroses, hyacinths, and anemones. The pansies and violas were large ami attractive classes. Several trade displays added to the attractions of the show, an exhibit of particular interest being two tables of native shrubs and plants exhibited by Alessrs H. Bennett and Sons, the winners of the Loder Cup. The following are the results: — DAFFODIL SOCIETY’S COMPETITIONS Judge: Air C. S. Longuet (Invercargill). OPEN CLASSES.
