GAMING HOUSE RAID

FIFTEEN MEN ARRESTED. AUCKLAND, October 11. A raid by 10 detectives on a twostoreyed building in Grey’s avenue in the city last night resulted in the arrest of 15 men—l 3 Europeans and two Chinese. The detectives surrounded the building, two doors being well guarded. Two detectives entered the building and saw a number of men playing fan tan and pakapoo. The players showed no interest in the arrival of the detectives who were regarded as casual spectators. Then the rest of the detectives entered, and several men were quietly arrested. Two men hiding under a bench were not noticed until they uwittingly advertised their presence. A detective standing near the bench was evidently mistaken by the two men underneath as one of their companions, as one of the two reached out and touched the detective’s leg, telling him in a whisper to hide unless he wanted to be arrested. The two men were promptly brought from their hiding place. A quantity of cards, counters, and other paraphernalia was collected by the police.
