RACING IN AUSTRALIA.

THE A.J.C. SPRING MEETING. STRENGTH WINS METROPOLITAN. SYDNEY, October 5. The spring meeting was continued at Randwick to-day in delightful weather, and the attendance was 44.000. The track was in splendid order. Autopay was installed a strong public fancy in the Shorts Handicap following upon his Epsom victory. After running prominently in the early stages he weak ned towards the eml. Apparently Saturday's hard race had exacted its toll. The Metropolitan went to a despised outsider. Strength, who was placed well throughout, and finished stoutly under the vigorous riding of the jockey, Bartie, gaining victory by a head. Following are the results: — THE SHOKTS HANDICAP. Fiist Acre made a bold bid for victory in the Waverley Handicap, appearing to have the race in his keeping at the distance, but failed to stall off the fastfinishing effort of Veilmond and Strength in the final strides. Time, 2min 3|sec. VICTORIA AMATEUR TURF CLUB. MELBOURNE, October 10. The weather was fine and there was a satisfactory attendance for the opening of the Caulfield meeting. Taciturn, stable mate of the National Hurdles winner Rakwool, beat the fast-finishing Pitoofa in the Hurdles. The latter was unlucky. Y T auntry, who was trained by the cx-New 1 Zealander Dave Price, led all through in rhe First Division of the Debutant Stakes. He was purchased last week for l>o guineas. Verietas, bred by the owner (Mr S. A. Rawdon) won the Second Division easily.

Coonartha, a son of Manfred, finished well.

Cimbrian won the Stakes brilliantly, and will carry 8.13 in the Caulfield Cup and 8.10 ,r the Melbourne Cup. He is halt-biotn<r to Heroic, and was trained by the Nev Zealander, Lou Robertson. The Herald says:—‘‘Purchased by his present owner for 20gns, the aged gelding Strength achieved fame by winning the Metropolitan by a head from Concentrate after a gruelling struggle for more than a furlong, in which six horses partici pated. Strength’s victory was one of the most unexpected in the history of the race. He lasted just long enough to win from Concentrate, which, with a somewhat belated run, was gaining rapidly. Chide apparently made his run too soon, for he could make no impression on the leaders in the straight, while Y’eilmond did not do his best until the race was over.” THE CAULFIELD CUP. MELBOURNE.
