ANSWERS TO CORRESPONDENTS
“ Roses," Dunedin.—lt is really better to obtain the ordinary commercial lime sulphur from the seedsman and nix it according to the instructions on the tin for winter spraying. If yon desire to mix your own, the following procedure should be followed: 151 b of quick lime is placed in a wooden barrel and two gallons of boiling water are poured over it. To this add 101 b of flowers of sulphur immediately, together with three gallons of hot water. Cover the barrel with a cloth, and the mixture will boil with the slaking of the lime for 20 minutes. Stir occasionally, and, when boiling ceases, add sufficient wa*er to make 50 gallons. Strain this through a very fine sieve, and spray thoroughly. W. J., Invercargill.—Old seeds are never satisfactory, and I am afraid there is little use sowing carrot, celery, mangold and kale. The onian, spinacn and beans should be tried.
