PROCURER FOR CHINESE

CHARGE AGAINST TAXI DRIVER MAGISTRATE’S CAUSTIC REMARKS. AUCKLAND, August 25. The Police Court was cleared this morning while evidence was heard against William George White, aged 44, a taxi driver, on a charge of being idle and disorderly and habitually consorting with undesirables. The accused at first pleaded not guilty, but after the evidence altered his plea to guilty. Three domestics, all unemployed, aged 23, 20, and 21, all on probation, gave evidence that the accused had many times driven them out to the Chinese gardens on the outskirts of the city. Sometimes they stayed the night, but usually the accused called back for them. One girl said it was usual for the girls tn pay the accused. He was the only taxi driver who had taken them. The magistrate (Mr F. K. Hunt) : I haven’t words to say what I think about him. I won’t try to say anything. Unfortunately I can only give him three months. I wish I could give him 18 months. Counsel: We are not here to uphold the morals. The magistrate: He’s the biggest blackguard I have seen for months. If he comes again he will be charged with being a rogue and vagabond, and then I can give him 18 months.
