MISHAP ON ICE SLOPE

MINOR INJURIES SUFFERED. AUCKLAND, August 28.' Losing their foothold on the ice slope of Mount Ngauruhoe, four students of Victoria University College slipped 3000 feet down the steep incline while descending the volcano. W. Clark struck his head on a hummock of ice, and was rendered unconscious; Miss Alice Jacobs and Miss Gwen Bydder had their forearms bruised and frost-bitten. All were sent to Raetihi Hospital. The other girl in the party received minor injuries. The climbers were not roped together, but were armed with ice axes. Clark attributes the accident to the steps having become partly filled and insecure. A later message states that all the injured persons are progressing favourably.
