“ How long have you been out of work? ” Mr E. D. Mosley, JS.M., asked a defendant in the Christchurch Police Court the other day. “ Three years,” was the reply. “ There is something wrong somewhere, isn’t there? Have you tried to get work ? ” “ Yes.” “ Well, what is your trade?” “I’m a sailor really, but I have had to stay at home. I was 10 years in the navy.” “ Why don’t you try the country. You would be better working for 10s a week there than doing nothing in the town.” “ I don’t know anything about farms.” “ With 10 years in the navy you must be a handy man, and a handy man can always find something to do in the country. I’m a farmer’s son and I know.”
