THE NEW ZEALAND TEAM. MATCH AGAINST ESSEX. ANOTHER DRAW. LONDON, August 25. The match against Essex was drawn. Although the New Zealand bowlers made a good showing before lunch they lost their grip on the game after the interval. Bray and Nichols added 83 for the fourth wicket by steady batting. The latter was caught behind the wickets by Dempster, and Franklin was brilliantly caught by Talbot off Matheson. Daer was smartly stumped, the score reading 243 for seven wickets. Bray, however, continued to bat steadily, and, partnered by Sheffield, wiped out the deficit and .added 107 runs for the eighth wicket. Bray was eventually caught in the slips off a snick from Merritt. He batted for 215 minutes and hit 13 fours. Sheffield then attacked the bowling, hitting seven fours and one six off Cromb. The New Zealand bowlers were occasionally unlucky. Merritt and Matheson frequently beat the batsmen, and Weir bowled steadily into a strong wind for a considerable period before lunch. New Zealand was left with 05 minutes in which to score 111. Five wickets fell in an attempt to force the pace off accurate bowling by Daer. Mills batted brightly during his short stay. The New Zealand cricketers were beaten by Kent by nine wickets. 'Their display was extremely disappointing, and, with one exception, their batting in both innings was below standard. This and their poor catching yesterday were chiefly responsible for their defeat. The batsmen this morning simply got themselves out. Marriott bowled steadily, swinging the ball well, but Tie was not exceptionally difficult. The batsmen made bad mistakes. The last four wickets added only 19 runs. Marriott bowled 34 overs, 10 being maidens.

Kent’s keenness to win was shown by the return of Freeman, who was still slightly inconvenienced by his injured shoulder. Details:— NEW ZEALAND. First Innings. In. this match the New Zealanders are meeting for the first time during the tour A. P. Freeman, the most prolific wicket-taker in England since the war. The little googly bowler has taken so far this season 241 wickets at an average of a little over 15 runs apiece, and such success as the county has enjoyed in recent years has been due more to him than to any other member of the side. Kent are at present third in the championship, two places higher than they finished last season, but the early success of the county during the current season promised an even better record.

THE SUSSEX MATCH. DEMPSTER ANOTHER CENTURY. LONDON, August 29. The New Zealand cricketers commenced a match against Sussex to-day in fine weather before an attendance of 5000. Lowry won the toss and New Zealand batted on a fast wicket. The Sussex team is: Duleepsinhji, Bowley, Parkes (2), Cook, Langridge, Harold Gilligan, Collins, Wensley, Tqte, Coniford. Dempster and Mills started brightly, the latter hitting five fours before being bowled by Tate with a ball that whipped like lightning off the pitch. Dempster and Talbot provided brilliant cricket for the third wicket, hitting up 134 in 95 minutes. Talbot gave one of his brightest displays of the tour. He drove and hooked magnificently, hitting seven fours. Dempster maintained the mastery of the bowling, but after passing the century he took risks and was stumped yards out of his crease. He gave a sparkling, chanceless display, using practically every scoring shot, and his placing was brilliant. He batted 215 minutes and hit one six and 23 fours. Another sound innings followed, Kerr playing all the bowling confidently. He was bowled in attempting a big hit. He batted for 100 minutes and hit five fours. The Sussex attack was never difficult, and the batsmen were not troubled by Tate. Sussex batted for 40 minutes before stumps were drawn. J. Parkes was out lbw to Blunt’s first ball. Scores at the drawing of stumps:
