NEWPORT.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —I noticed the other day that you stated that Newport was in Wales, but I beg to assure you that most certainly it is in England. It is about 11 miles from the border between the two countries. _ I am in a position to know this, as I lived for about 16 years in Cardiff, ■which is in Wales, but only about a mile or so from the border, so that makes it as above stated. Cardiff is about 12 miles from Newport. About the year 1870 a law was passed closing public houses in Wales on Sundays, and so persons who were sufficiently thirsty used to walk into England, and just a few yards past the stream that was the boundary at that part, they could get what they wanted, which w r as proof of the above statement. I merely mention this, as I feel sure you like to be correct in all your statements.—l am, etc., H. M. Davey. [There is a New’port in Essex, Isle of Wight, Monmouth, Shropshire, Pembroke (Wales), Yorks, two in Ireland, and two in Scotland.—Ed. O.W.]
