HEALTH OF THE MAORIS
TUBERCULOSIS PREVALENT
DEPLORABLE LIVING CONDITIONS AUCKLAND, August 19.
“ The Health Department inspector is of opinion that 75 per cent, of the Maoris in the Franklin district have tuberculosis owing to the conditions under which they are living,” said Mr Parvin, the member for Franklin on the Auckland Hospital Board. He added that the living conditions of the Franklin Maoris was equally as bad as those at Mangere (reported yesterday). In one shed, eight feet by 10 feet, built of. kerosene cases, eight persons were living, paying 2s 6d as rent. A few days ago a baby was born there. Mr Wallace (chairman of the board) said that six Maori T.B. cases from Franklin had been sent to hospital, and he believed there were many more not receiving proper attention. Special provision should be made by the Native Department for indigent Maori hospital cases.
Dr S. Hughes, medical officer of health, said the conditions in Franklin district were a good deal worse than at Mangere.
