A narrow escape from death was experienced by O. Cowan, a Hinuera farmer (says the Greymouth Evening Star). Just before daylight, he went for his cows and saw one lying down. A dog which went to heel the cow dropped dead. Cowan realised in time that the cow was electrocuted through a broken power line. The occurrence took place in an open paddock, clear of fences. Lennie Briggs, of Riverside Drive, Lower Hutt, has been granted a free boy’s fishing license by the Wellington Acclimatisation Society in consideration of his having caught a 291 b eel in the Waiwetu Stream (states the Evening Post). It Was 4ft Ilin long and 17in in girth. Previously the society has given prizes for the largest eel and the greatest number caught in a season, but these prizes have now become luxuries.
