ADVERTISING LOTTERY

GISBORNE, August 19

Charges of conducting a lottery by means of an advertising leaflet dropped from an aeroplane, entitling the finders of signed copies to free rides in the plane, were made against George Alfred Nicholls, officer of the Gisborne Air Transport Company, and Robert James Kerridge, picture theatre manager, in the Magistrate’s Court to-day.

The case against the former was dismissed because proof was lacking that any unsigned copies were distributed, while the charge against Kerridge, which was held to have been technically proved, was also dismissed under the Justices of the Peace Act, in view of the surrounding circumstances. The magistrate (Mr P. H. Harper) commented that he was satisfied the defendants believed that the scheme did not constitute a breach of the Gaming Act, and that some effort had been made to avoid a breach.
