MINISTER OF EDUCATION
“LIVING IN A WORLD APART ’
PLATITUDES AND THEORIES. WELLINGTON, August 20. The Minister of Education (Mr H. Umore) was chided by Mr D. Jones (Mid-Canterbury) in the House of Representatives this evening for his recent abstract speech upon world economics while the House wanted a policy speech on education. The Minister had avoided every point of criticism so far as expenditure was concerned, Mr Jones said, and indicated that he was living in a world apart. Platitudes and theories were no answer to the criticism that had been levelled at his department. The member for Central Otago, who was a member of the Education Commission (a United Party member) informed the Minister that at least £500,000 could be saved without difficulty or loss of efficiency. The Prime Minister had definitely stated the opinion that large savings could be effected, and the Minister’s reply was the most disappointing speech of the present session. The question whether money could be provided in future did not appear to have entered into his calculations, but it had entered into the calculations of every private person in the Dominion.
