An honorary degree of doctor of — science has been conferred upon Professor Einstein, who' delivered the Rhodes Memorial lectures at Oxford.

There is announced an English edition of “ The Philosophy of Religion,” by Professor Rudolph Otto, of Marburg University, translated by G. Dicker. Dr W. Tudor Jones has contributed a foreword.

A week of homage to the memory of Senor Vincente Blasco Ibanez, the Spanish novelist whose anti-monarchist views led to his exile, was recently organised at Barcelona.

Among the memoirs of the early spring will be an illustrated volume by Dr H. R. Oswald, entitled “ Reminiscences of a London Coroner.”

The death occurred at St. Leonards of Mr Frank Frankfort Moore, the novelist and dramatist. He published over 80 novels, plays, and books of verse. He was in his seventy-sixth year.

Miss Caroline E. Playne has a new book coming out, entitled “ Society at War, 1914-1916.” Every aspect of social life during the first half of the struggle is reviewed under appropriate chapter headings.

Mr Georges Surdez, who has just published a first novel called “ The Demon Caravan,” is a Swiss-American, and has lived in Morocco for many years. During the recent war between Spain and the Riffs he served with the Spanish forces on the intelligence staff.

One of the new season's books will be the new memoir of “ Father Ignatius of Llanthony,” by Donald Attwater. The work is based on hitherto unused records, personal and documentary, throwing fresh light on the character and career of Father Ignatius, as well as on the life of the monastery and convent which he founded at Llanthony.

Mrs P. H. B. Lyon, the Rector of Edinburgh Academy, who has just been appointed headmaster of Rugby School, is the author of several books, including “ Songs of Youth and War ” and “ The Discovery of Poetry.” He won the Newdigate Prize in 1919.

The Essex Archaeological Society announces that the report is ready for press of- the excavations at Holly Trees. Colchester, in 1927-29, in the course of which Roman remains of great interest were discovered. It is hoped to publish the report, which has been prepared by M. R. Hull and P. G. Laver, who were in charge of the work, in an illustrated volume. Particulars may be obtained from H. W. Lewer, Priors, Loughton, Essex.

An illustrated monograph on “ Chinese Ceramics in Private Collections ” has been issued in a limited edition. A selection has been made from a number of notable collections, the specimens being depicted in colours and monochrome, and described by R. L. Hobson, Bernard Rackham, and William King.

A bronze plaque bearing the inscription: “Enoch Arnold Bennett, novelist and playwright, was born herftf Miy 27, 1867,” is to be placed on the house at the corner of Hope street and Hanover street. Henley, where Mr Bennett was born.

The first volume has been published of an illustrated survey of “ The Art of Carved Sculpture,” by Kinetone Parkes, covering the schools of Western Europe, America, and Japan. The second and completing volume, devoted to sculptural activity and development in Central and Northern Europe, is expected shortly. The work is appearing in the “ Universal Art ” scries, edited by Frederick Marriott.

Miss Aelfrida Tillyard, whose latest novel is called “ Haste to the Wedding,” has already written three novels, four volumes of verse, a biography, and six books on comparative religion and mysticism. She was educated at Lausanne and at the University of Florence, and before that at the hands of Mrs Verrail, wife of Professor Verrall, of Cambridge, the “Great Verrall” of Flecker’s poem.

The second volume of the “ History of Glasgow,” the first volume of which was written by the late Dr Robert Renwick, is about to be issued. The second volume, by Mr George Eyre-Todd, continues the history from the Reformation, to the Revolution.

The history of “The Indian Civi] Service,” by Mr L. S. S. O’Malley, C.1.E., a survey extending from 1601 to 1930, is announced. Lord Zetland has contributed a foreword.

“ Two Lone Ships,” by George Kopp, recording the exploits during the war of the German sister ships Goeben and Breslau, will be published during the coming season.

“A Modern Herbal,” by Mrs Grieve, long announced, is now ready. Filling two illustrated volumes, and edited by

Mrs Level, the work describes over 1000 plants.

An illustrated history of “ The Knights Hospitallers in the Holy Land,” by Colonel E. J. King, C.M.G., Knight of Justice and librarian of the British Order of St. John of Jerusalem, is announced. The book throws fresh light on the heroic period in the history of that Order, from its origin in a little hospice for pilgrims in Jerusalem to the fall of Acre in 1291.
