A strange fish was caught by an Opotiki resident at the Hukuwar Beach recently. It was 30 inches long, with eight arms seven inches long and two 12 inches long. The body was shaped not unlike that of a gurnard, and the colouring was similar, but much brighter. At the tail were two large fins seven inches wide. It was identified as a squid of a species which is common on the New England coast of the United States, but, so far as is known, it had not been reported in New Zealand waters before. The fish was sent to the Dominion Museum.
