A meeting of wholesalers, manufacturers, and retailers, convened by the Canterbury Traders’ Welfare Association, was held last week to protest against the Trading Coupons Bills, which has been referred to°a Select Committee of the House, and the following resolution to be forwarded to Wellington was carried unanimously: — “ This very representative meeting of wholesale and retail traders of Christchurch views with alarm the totally inadequate Trading Gifts Bill introduced this session. The present pernicious, demoralising gift schemes in operation have meant grave loss to both wholesale and retail traders everywhere, and unless absolutely prohibited must lead to many others being compelled to adopt similar schemes in selfprotection. This meeting strongly protests against a continuation of this unfair method of trading, and calls upon the Government to reintroduce the Bill of last session, with certain additions, which, will prohibit gift schemes of any nature whatsoever.”
The reserved judgment of the Chief Justice (Mr Justice Myers) in the case in which the owner-driver of a service car plying between Napier and Hastings appealed against his conviction by a magistrate for a breach of the by-laws reverses the decision and allows costs. His Honor stated that the appellant’s vehicle did not come within the definition of a borough omnibus, as the termini were not both within the borough. The vehicles were, therefore, motor cabs, under which licenses they had been operating. They were, however, liable to taxation in both boroughs.
