On July 24 Alexander James Churton and Herbert Barrington left Christchurch in a car, intending to travel up the east coast and across to Reefton and get work However, neither reached-his destination, for on the trip the pair committed a series of thefts at various places, to which they pleaded guilty and were committed to the Wellington Supreme Court for sentence. Barrington also pleaded guilty to several thefts at Christchurch.
