Reference to the spread of heather in Marlborough was made by the president (Mr R. G. Dawkins) at. a meeting held by the Pieton Chamber of Commerce recently. He said that it was becoming a distinct menace. Recently he saw a Blenheim resident taking plants to that centre, with the intention of transplanting them, and he felt that the fact that they were a menace could not be too widely known. Air C. M. S. Healey said a n Awatere settler had also been observed taking plants of the weed to Seddon, with the object of planting them at the base of the Soldiers’ Memorial. It was decided that the attention of the Marlborough Progress League and the Farmers’ Union should be directed to the menace.

During her recent trip to the Campbell Islands the Tamatea called at the Auckland Islands (writes the Stewart Island correspondent of the Southland News). One of the crew stated that a number of cattle were observed when steaming close to Enderby Island, and that they seemed to be in good condition. The last time these cattle were seen they were reported to be in danger of dying from starvation, having eaten out the feed through becoming over-numerous. Perhaps Nature has remedied this by means of the survival of the fittest.
