Bankruptcies in the Auckland district last month totalled 16, as compared with 15 in July, 1930, and 11 last June. The total for the year to date is 72 ; as against 77 for the corresponding period of last year, and 80 for the first seven months or 1929. A record number of bankruptcies, 17, occurred in Christchurch during July For the seven months of the year there were 54 bankruptcies, as compared with 31 in the corresponding period of 1930. One hears now and then that people have relinquished their motor cars in favour of the bicycle for economy, but the idea is not borne out by the experience of cycle dealers, who say that no doubt some motorists are using their bicycles more than usual, but they do not buy new bicycles for the purpose (says the Christchurch Sun). Women’s second-hand bicycles are at a premium, and that may be accounted for by the fact that the family car is not being used by mothers and daughters as much as formerly.
