Two interesting speakers pleased the members of the English-speaking Union recently at one of the pleasant afternoon tea parties held each month during the winter by the organisation. One, Airs Chafy, a lady who is travelling New Zealand and other parts, with special interest in Girl Guides and Guiders, spoke of her visits to many places, and especially of her life in Constantinople, where she was for many years. She was charmed with the Turkish women, who are very’ elegant, and have beautiful manners. They have led terribly idle, purposeless lives in the past, but now they are getting the chance of something better they’ are not slow to avail themselves of their opportunities, and are stepping forth into the arena of life with much zest, and good effect. The men, said Airs Chafy, are sporting, cheerful, and attractive, and love a good joke. That they have other more solid qualities is, of course, well known. Airs Chafy spoke, too, of the London “ home ” of the union, which is situated in Charles street, off Berkeley Square, and which is a delightful place of entertainment. The drawing-reception room has pale green brocade walls, and is generally- artistic; there is a beautifully panelled library,

and the great dining room is modern in decoration, light and bright to a degree. Visitors are made welcome, and “ passed on ” in the kindliest way, and the members of the E.S.U. have generally a good time. Mrs Henry Hadfield was the other speaker. She told, very interestingly, of her teaching of braille. When in Sydney for some years she was a regular voluntary’ helper at the Institute for the Blind, and there learned to write braille, and gained an immense interest iu the blind. Since she has been in Wellington she has been a voluntary worker at the Red Cross, and has held classes in braille, teaching many people, most of whom write letters to blind people—to their great joy—and others transcribe books, articles, and stories, all of which are an immense pleasure. Both ladies were cordially’ thanked for their addresses. Later afternoon tea was handed round, and a pleasant social time spent. Airs Bennie was hostess for the afternoon, and among those present were Lady Findlay, Alesdames Stewart. AlGowan. Campbell. Lloyd, Knowles, Hughes, Ffitch, Gordon. Wheeler, Davidson, and many’ others.
