PIGEON SHOOTING. SOUTH ISLAND CHAMPIONSHIP. CHRISTCHURCH. August 8. The South Island Live Pigeon Championship was decided at Rangiora to-day, the event being a sweepstake of 21 birds. There were 17 competitors. C. Jamieson (Christchurch) shot all his 'birds and won the championship. W. G. Gerard (Snowden) and A. N. Turner (Christchurch), with one misa each, divided the second and third prizes. CYCLING. TAIERI ROAD RACE. The Otago Amateur Cycling Club held a road race from Parkside round a block of the Taieri Plains and back on Saturday afternoon, a field of 13 riders facing the starter, Mr J. C. Fogarty. The race was a tribute to the handicapping of Mr Alan Ockwell, as 40sec covered the first 10 riders home, including the scratch men. The field set off at a brisk pace, with a slight assisting wind. P. M'Connell. off the minute mark, punctured and was forced to.retire early. The 3min men —Smart, Taylor, and Greenfield—were teaming well and were fast gathering in the field. Harty, Oakes, and M’Gregor keeping them busy. Nearing home the field bunched a little, and were keeping well away from the scratch men, who had overtaken Hay and were pedalling well. Coming up Look-out Point Smart, Oakes. Greenfield. Harty, and Taylor were leading, and a fine finish was promised. Greenfield’s tyre unfortunately had a slow puncture, which necessitated cautious riding. Near the finishing line Smart put in a great sprint to head Oakes by half a wheel. Greenfield being about a length back. G. Smith, who was seventh, gained fastest time, E. Fletcher recording second fastest. The following are the placings:—Smart I, Oakes 2. Greenfield 3, Harty 4, Taylor 5, M’Gregor 6, Smith 7, Fletcher 8, Hay 9, O’Brien 10. Duncan 11, Nelson 12. Fastest time, G. Smith (Ihr 19min 30sec) ; second fastest, E. Fletcher (Ihr 19min 40sec). The race was controlled by Messrs Johnston, Simon, and Fogarty. PACIFIC CLUB. The Pacific Cycling Club held the final race of the series from Parkside to Allanton and back on Saturday, a field of 13 riders facing the starter, Mr C. A. Lucas. The limit man, J. Blackie, off 12min. set off at a good pace and Binnie and Gilchrist, off lOtnin, also settled down early in the race and made a break that the back men could not bridge. This pair eventually finished about a minute ahead of Parsons (3min) and Hetherington (scr), who had a good tussle for third place. Parsons prevailing by half a length. Gilchrist showed superior sprinting power and headed Binnie by several lengths. Hetherington rode a great race from scratch and returned the excellent time of Ihr 9min 16 l-ssee. Result.—C. The game between University Al and 0.G.H.5., which decided the winners of the shield for this season, was a particularly interesting one in view of the fact that these two teams were compelled to meet a second time, having drawn on the previous Saturday; High School were this time victorious, the final score being 30 — 23. Playing at the Waitaki Girls' High School grounds, in dull and cold weather, which suited the players. Otago’s representative B Grade basket ball team defeated the Oamaru B representatives by 25 to 10.
