THE MAIDSTONE TOURNAMENT SEMI-FINALS PLAYED. VANCOUVER, August 3. In the semi-finals to-day Mrs Sheplierd defeated Alary Greef (Kansas City), 4—6, 6—3, 6—2; Mrs John Van Ryn defeated Mrs Alarion, Zinderstein Jessup (Wilmington, Delaware), 6—4, 10—8. In the doubles Alisses Phyllis Mudford and Betty Nuthall entered the final by defeating Miss Alice Alarble and Dorothy Weisel (Sacramento), 6—l, 6— 3. They will meet Aliss Marjorie Alorrill and Airs Jessup. SEMI-FINALS OF DOUBLES. VANCOUVER, August 4. In the semi-finals of the doubles Alisses Nuthall and Aludford defeated Alisses Morrill and Jessup, 6—4, 6—l; Alise Round and Airs Whittingsall defeated Misses Greef and Anderson, 6—2, 6—4. At the Westside lawn tennis courts, Forest Hills, to-day in the Wightman Cup Mrs Helen Wills Moody defeated Miss Mudford, 6—l, 6—4. before 5000 spectators. Aliss Aludford seemed stage-struck at the outset, and hit wildly against Mrs Moody’s well-timed drives. She rallied in the second set to score on a break through Airs Moody’s service, and gave a splendid account of herself in a series of hard-fought baseline duels. Mrs Aloody played confidently, hut was frequently forced to scramble for Miss Aludford’s flying shots to corners. MISS ROUND BEATEN. NEW 7 YORK, August 7. Airs Harper defeated Dorothy Round in a marathon match of almost two hours, 6—3, 4—6, 9—7. Miss Round had set poiut five times in the third set, but Airs Harper rallied. United requires only one victory in Saturday’s four matches to win the trophy. MISS NUTHALL BEATEN. NEW YORK, August 7. At Forest Hills Aliss Helen Jacobs had a surprise victory over Miss Betty Nuthall by B—6, 6—4. Aliss Jacobs made a sensational comeback to chop-stroke her way to triumph after dropping the first four games. She exhibited superb control after steadying domi, whereas Aliss Nuthall, after a characteristic start, wilted under the tense heat. AMERICA. REGAINS THE CUP. NEW 7 YORK, August 8. At I 4 orest Hills the United States regained the Wightman Cup on Saturday Miss Helen Jacobs defeating Aliss Phyllis Aludford, 6—4, 6—2. Aliss Aludford’s service was highly effective, but she could not compete with Aliss Jacobs’s backhand drives. Aliss Aludford rapidlytired under the extreme heat. Airs Helen Wills Aloody defeated Aliss Betty Nuthall, 6—4, 6—2, before a gallery of 8000. Aliss Nuthall began briskly by taking four straight points for the opening game, but Airs Aloody broke through her service iu the third for a two to one lead, but was outstroked in the fourth, and lost her own delivery. Miss Nuthall failed to score a point in the sixth game, and then double faulted three times, and never seemed to recover from it.

At Forest Hills Airs Shepherd and Aliss Aludford defeated Airs Hazel Wightman and Miss Sarah Palfrey, 6—4, 10 —8; Aliss Nuthall and Airs Whittingstall defeated Airs Moody and Airs Harper, B—6, 5—7, 6—3. UNIVERSITY CONTEST. RUGBY, August 4. In an international university lawn tennis match at Eastbourne to-day Oxford and Cambridge beat Harvard ami Yale by 16 rubbers to 5, the largest margin since the inception of the contest.
