Hawes (North-East Valley), 179 pointe 3 CHURCH CHOIR CONTEST, B Grade, for choirs of 25 voices or under.— (a) “Fierce Was the Wild Billow ”; (b) “Abide With Me.” Caversham Methodist and Anderson’s Bay Presbyterian, 350 points, equal 1 Ravensbourne Presbyterian, 349 pointe 3 Also competed: Green Island Presbyterian 348. The points awarded to the competitors in sections A and B respectively were:— Caversham Methodist, 173 and 177; Anderson’s Bay Presbyterian, 176 and 174; Ravensbourne Presbyterian, 174 and 175; Green Island Presbyterian, 170 and 178. Mr Clitheroe stated that very good performances were given by all the choirs. The balance and blend of the voices was on the whole very good. All the conduc- I tors had the right conception of the anthem, and the hymn was well sung, although none of the choirs made the most of the unison verse. One or two of the choirs gave some really beautiful, quiet singing, and in his remarks Mr Clitheroe drew the attention of choirs in general to the remarkably beautiful effects that can be obtained by real pianissimo singing. The voices of the Caversham Methodist Choir blended better than those of the Anderson’s Bay Presbyterian Church, but the latter gave some really beautiful, quiet singing and very well preserved rhythm. The Ravensbourne Presbyterian Choir responded well to its conductor and gave very good interpretations of both pieces, but at times the altos were inclined to come through too strongly, spoiling the balance. The Green Island Presbyterian Choir gave the best interpretation of the hymn tune, but a loss of pitch in the anthem lost its several marks. SACRED SOLO, gentlemen—Own selection. Mr Denis Dowling (Ranfurly), 185 points .1 Mr J. E. Davies (Dunedin), 184 points 2 Mr C. S. Hawes (North-East Valley), 183 points 3 CONTRALTO SOLO —“Author of All Mv Joys” (Gluck). Miss Margaret Green (Belleknowes), 183 points 1 Miss Margaret E. Howden (Port Chalniers), 181 points 2 Miss Mary Somerville (Roslyn), 780 points 3 VOCAL SOLO, ladies, open to all—(a) Operatic Air, own selection; (b)

ballad, own selection. Miss Evelyn Sheppard (Dunedin), 376 points 1 Mrs Lionel Graham (Balclutha), 368 points ~ 2 Miss Margaret Green (Belleknowes), 367 points 3 V OCAL SOLO, gentlemen, amateurs— Selection from light opera or musical comedy. Mr Denis Dowling (Ranfurly), 186 points 1 Mr C. S. Hawes (North-East Valley), 185 points 2 Mr G. Salmond (Dunedin), 183 points 3 Mr Clitheroe stated that the winner had a voice of simply delightful quality. He chose a song from musical comedy of a light humorous nature, which he interpreted very well. Mr Hawes used his voice very well and preserved good rhythm. He gave a very good performance indeed, but the quality of his voice was not so good as that of Mr Dowling. Mr Salmond sang with great ease, but hesitated in the first verse, having evidently forgotten the words. V OCAL SOLO, amateur, gentlemen, open to those who have never won a first prize in vocal sections at previous Dunedin Competitions—Own selection. Mr Denis Dowling (Ranfurly) and Mr John Kennedy (North Dunedin), 180 points, equal 1 Mr J. P. Mayhew (Dunedin), 179 points 3 IRISH FOLK SONG, amateurs, ladies—own selection, by Irish composer. Miss Evelyn Sheppard (Dunedin), 182 points .. i Miss D. M. Sligo (Roslyn), 180 points 2 Miss Margaret E. Howden (Port ; Chalmers), 178 points 3 FIRMS’ CHOIR CONTEST—(a) “On ' the Banks of Allan Water ” (unaccompanied), (b) “Comrades in Arms” (accompanied). Public Service, 368 points i , Mosgiel Woollen Mills and D.1.C., 367 ' points (equal) 2 Mr Clitheroe said that this was an ■ exceedingly closely contested section, and the winning choir gave a very finished performance. In the first song the tone gradations were excellent, as was the I I finish. The tenors were good and the choir well balanced. In the second piece

the attack was rather weak in the opening, but the rhythm was good. The sopranos were inclined to go out of tune, but worked up to a good climax. There was nothing to choose between the choirs placed second. The Mosgiel Woollen Mill Choir ended .out of tune on the first verse in the first song, but verse 3 was verj well done, and the interpretation was excellent. In the second piece the opening was good and well sustained, but the sopranos were inclined to go out of tune on the high notes. The D.I.C. Choir started well. They lost pitch slightly, but improved considerably. Verse 3 was the best of all choirs-. The opening in the second piece was good, but there was not enough contrast between the first and second sections. The last section was good, but the men were rather weak. The last chord was well worked up to, but the chord itself was not well done. Messrs Barnett’s Choir’s balance and blend were good, but there was not enough made of the individual parts. The rhythm was too square, and the chording was not clean. In the second piece the opening was too slow and not quite in tune in places. The rhythm was not preserved. The allegro was much better, but the rallentando on page 4 was too sudden, and the phrases were sometimes carelessly finished. The choir was slightly out of tune at times. The altos were good in the final section, and although the finish was worked up to well the choir somehow mixed the climax. CHILD’S ACTION SONG, 12 and under 15 years, in character—Own Selection. Miss Lexie Mathieson (Tomahawk), 179 pointe 1 Miss Ruewi Clancy (Dunedin), 178 points 2 Master Earle Collie (Dunedin), 177 points 3

SACRED SOLO, ladies—Own Selection. Miss Evelyn Sheppard (Dunedin), 186 points 1 Miss Margaret E. Howden (Port Chalmers). 185 pointe 2 Miss D. M. Sligo (Roslyn) 184 points 3 VOCAL SOLO, amateurs, ladies, open to those who have never won a first prize in vocal sections at previous Dunedin Competitions—own selection. Miss Margaret Howden (Port Chalmers), 183 points 1 Miss Dorothy Dagg (Dunedin), 182 points 2 Miss Kathleen Bond (Christchurch), 181 points 3 IRISH FOLK SONG, amateurs, gentlemen —own selection, by Irish composer. Mr C. S. Hawes (N.E. Valley), 182 points 1 Mr Denis Dowling (Ranfurly), 180 points 2 Mr J. E. Davies (Dunedin), 179 points 3

BURNS SONG, amateur, ladies or gentlemen—own selection. Miss Evelyn Shepard (Dunedin), 187 points 1 Miss Margaret E. Howden (Port Chalmers) and Mrs Lionel Graham (Balclutha), equal, 184 pointe 2 SECONDARY GIRLS’ SCHOOL CHOIR CONTEST—(a) Two-part song, "A Lake and a Fairy Boat” (music by Thomas F. Dunhill, words by Tom Hood) ; (b) Unison Song, “ ’Twas One of Those Dreams” (words by Moore). Girls’ High School, 370 points .... 1 St. Dominic’s College, 368 points .. 2 St. Philomena’s College, 367 points .. 3 Highly commended: Archerfield 366. The points awarded to the competitors in sections (a) and (b) respectively were as follows:—Girls’ High School, 185 and 185; St. Dominic’s College, 185 and 183; St. Philomena's- College, . 184 and 183: Archerfie'd, 183 and 183.

In annnouncing the result, the judge said the competition had been a very enjoyable section. It was very refreshing to hear four choirs of such high standard from the secondary schools All the choirs sang well. The winning choir gave an excellent performance. Its rhythm was very good all the way through, and tbe opening was very good indeed. This choir gave the best singing at the change of key in the first piece. In the second piece it sang with good tone throughout, and the voices were very well contrasted. St. Dominic’s Choir sang excellently in the first piece, but its diction was rathet pedantic. The balance was excellent, and tbe rhythm and tone were also very good. The second song was also good, but £he finishing of the words rather spoiled the effect. The choir was spread out .rather too much on the stage to give the best results. St. Philomena’s Choir gave a very dainty piece of singing in the first piece, but tbe tone of the trebles was occasionally weak. The girls singing the second part were very good all the way through. The second piece was sung very well, but there was not enough contrast in the verses. Archerfield Choir sang well. The tone was rather breathy, and the attack not always clean. This choir did not achieve unanimity. One voice was inclined to hold the notes on too SONG, FOR GIRLS, 13 and under 16 years—“ Snowflakes” (Cowan).

R. Scott (Dunedin) .. ..3

This section was judged by Mr W. R. Brugh and Mr J. B. Callan. In commenting on the speeches. Mr Callan said that they had heard impromptu speeches on other days when the audience got more amusement. It should be noted, however, that humour which was farcical and which really led the audience to laugh at and not with a competitor could not help him to win. Although more amusing speaking had been heard in previous years, the standard that night bad been extremely high. The winner invested his speech with a great deal of animation and vigour, while never losing his dignity. He varied his manner, and showed great capacity to hold the attention of an audience, and his matter, although not the best beard, was thoughtful and sensible, and was presented with an absence of gagging. He bad. however, a slightly nasal intonation, and made several mispronunciations. Mr Shanahan, who was extraordinarily fluent, presented the best matter heard and gave a thoughtful and judicial speech. Had the com petition been for an essay, his was much the best effort, but he lacked vigour, variety, and animation in delivery, and might not conquer the attention of a public audience. Mr Scott had the most pleasing voice and most cultured manner of all the competitors, but he might with advantage adopt some other method of holding his hands. He was somewhat , slow in coming to the point, and at one stage showed that he hardly understood the bill. CHARACTER RECITAL, girls or boys, under 12 years—Own selection. Master Bobby Whale (Mornington). 83 points 1 Miss Ngaire J. Glue (Anderson’s Bay), 81 points 2 Miss Daphne Morrison (Dunedin), 79 pointe . . 3 Commended: Miss Laura' Shrimpton (Mornington) 78, Miss Lorraine Salmon (Mornington) 78. RECITATION, ladies, open to all—“ La Belle Dame Sans Merci ” (John Keats). Miss Margaret Seelye (Roslyn), 90 pointe 1 Miss Jessie M'Lennan (Dunedin, 88 points 2 Miss Pennie Marshall (Anderson’s Bay). 87 points 3 For the benefit of future competitors Mr Brugh stated that the general conception

of a piece and its successful interpretation carried much more conviction to him than anything else, and condoned a multi tude of inaccuracies. He went on to say that this was a particularly well-contested section. Some of the non-placed competitors gave very creditable renderings. The recital of “La Belle Dame Sans Merci,’ which wae, perhaps, one of the finest romantic ballads in the language, was exceptionally well done by the winner. Her general conception was good, and her recital of it made a rounded and complete picture. The changes of the speakers were well made, the poetic imagery was beauti-

fully expressed, and her last line fullydepicted the finality desired by Keats. Miss M’Lennan, although she gave a fine performance, did not paint the completed picture as did Miss Seelye. She did not bring out the changes in the speakers sufficiently; her word pictures were not so clearly defined, and she lost in her treatment of several lines. Miss Marshall gave a very fair rendering, slightly less effective than that of Miss M'Lennan. She s was inclined to be unnecessarily tens>e, and in several parts pausation could have been employed with advantage. RECITATION, under 12 years—Own selection, not humorous. _ First Section.
