An interesting parrot story is in circulation, and we are assured that the facts are correct (says the Dannevirke News). The bird has been in-possession of a Dannevirke resident for about 25 years and was known by the name of Joseph. Recently its conduct during the afternoon became most unusual, and fears were entertained for its physical wellbeing, so much so that it was consoled by word and sympathetically stroked by its anxious owner. It was left alone for a time, and later when being examined the startling discovery was made that it had laid an egg—said to be the first in 25 years. Naturally such a feat necessitated a re-christening and the bird’s name has now been altered to Josephine—all on account of one egg.

The spirit of mining enterprise is again abroad in the Wnangarei district (states the Northern Advocate). Not for many years have eyes looked towards the coalfields with so much hope as in the last three or four months. It is true that nothing very substantial in the way of results has been realised as yet, but experienced miners firmly believe that the mineral wealth is there for the finding. Recently a record number of boring licenses have been issued for the Kauri district, and some prospecting is also being done at Whareora. The machinery provided by the Mines Department is stimulating activity ia searching for coal. 7
