With no open water within miles of the site, a duck has built its nest in the fork of a pine tree near Alethven (states the Ashburton Guardian), and it is sitting on a batch of eggs. Only a few people know of the existence of this strangely placed nest, and they are wondering how the mother duck will get her young ones down from the tree without injuring them. There has been a good deal of activity in the building trade in Invercargill during September (states . the Southland Daily News). Permits were issued for work to the value of £12,578, whereas for September last year the figure was £11,779. Details of the work for the month are: — Five new dwellings (£4880),- eight additions. to dwellings (£499), two business premises (£2360), three.additions*to business premises (£2200), two other buildings (£2639).
